Just look at this sweet little guy! The cooooooold weather drove us inside for Eli's 5-month photo session and I couldn't be happier about it. The family's second bedroom - with a comfy bed and lots of windows - was absolutely perfect for our session!

1) that Dylan always says, "I love you too." Even if you didn't say it first. I especially love when he says, "I love you too sweetheart." How cute is that? He makes my heart happy.

2) that if you show Logan a photo with him in it, he points to himself and says, "Baby!" Dylan always calls Logan "Baby" or "the baby" and apparently now Logan has adopted it as well.

3) that Dylan announces the emotional impact of every decision made in our household. No more apple juice today? "That makes Dylan sad." Going to the playground today? "That makes Dylan happy!" And yes, it's always announced in the third person.

4) seeing Logan attempt more and more complex words. And he does so well with them too - "alligator" and "octopus" among them.

5) how every meal - be it breakfast, lunch or dinner - Dylan tells me he wants fish sticks, green peas and dip. (All he really wants is the dip... aka ketchup!)

6) how Logan only wants mommy to pick him up out of his crib in the morning. If Kevin goes in to get him, Logan lies back down and pretends that he's going back to sleep.

7) that Dylan loves to cuddle. Every morning tells me, "I want to sit with mommy." And he does. He just wants to sit on the sofa and cuddle until he's fully awake.

8) that whenever you ask Logan if he's sleepy, he vigorously shakes his head no, even if he can barely keep his eyes open. I ask him several times a day now just for the fun of it. :)

back from the land of the mouse

Phew! What a whirlwind the past week has been. We jetted down to Disney World last Thursday to give my boys their first real introduction to the land of the mouse. Although Dylan is already a big fan of modern Disney hits such as Cars, The Incredibles, Bug's Life, Wall-E, etc. In just 4.5 days we covered Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. By no means did we see eveything, but we certainly hit it pretty hard. The boys were troopers through it all, but I have to say they napped VERY well today. I think it will take them (and us) a few days to fully recover!

I'm sure I'll have more on our Disney experience - and pictures of course! - to post over the next few days. But in the meantime, I wanted to let everyone know that I'm back. I have stacks of orders etc to sort through and packge up so please give me a day or so to get through it all. It's all coming together!

For the first time in YEARS, Kevin and I and the boys are staying in New Orleans for Christmas. In past years we've always traveled - either to Boston to spend the holidays with my family or to Houston to see Kevin's sister and her family. But Dylan has finally reached an age that he is aware of Christmas and excited for it so this year we want to be home with our boys when they wake up Christmas morning and run to the tree to see what Santa brought them. We bought our tree a couple nights ago and put it up last night. The boys were so excited to "help" decorate it - and we only had one ornament casualty! Dylan is fascinated by the tree. :)

It's hard to believe that it's December already. Where has the time gone??? I'm knee-deep in the busy season, but I wanted to take a few moments for some general announcements and housekeeping.

First of all I want to thank all of my wonderful clients. It's been a busy and exciting year. I've been amazed by the demand and honored to capture all of your families.

Secondly, December is BOOKED. Beyond booked really. I've squeezed in as many last minute requests as possible, but if you're not already on my schedule, I've seriously got nothing left (exception being any newborn clients that are already booked). But I am scheduling away for January and February if you can wait until after the first of the year. Just drop me a line.

Lastly, Amy Drouet Photography will be closed December 10-16 and December 24-January 1. In the first case I will not have any access to email and voicemail and will return all messages when I get back. In the second case I will be returning calls and emails as time allows and continuing the behind the scenes work (editing, placing orders, etc.)b but no sessions will be booked during this time period.

See you in 2010!

Today I met up with sweet little Jax, 8 weeks old. Jax was signed up for a true newborn session, but we were never able to do it as he arrived five weeks early and spent his first few weeks in the hospital. Although tiny, Jax was just as alert and awake as a typical 8 week ld, but I did catch this shot during the few minutes that he napped for us and I loved it so I had to share it right away. What a cutie!

A note to my clients...

As you all know, the holidays are rapidly approaching. I've been working every spare moment, including some late, late nights to get galleries out as quickly as possible. 'Tis the busy season after all. :) I have several orders due in from the lab over the next few days and I will get those out to you as quickly as I can.

However Amy Drouet Photography will be closed Dec 10-15. All orders placed and paid for by the 9th will be sent to the lab immediately. All orders that are returned from the lab prior to the 10th will be delivered/sent out to you before I leave. Orders that are not returned from the lab by the 10th will be delivered/sent out to you on the 16th. Orders received after the 9th will be submitted when I return on the 16th.

All of this is to say, if you have not placed an order yet - or have not paid for an order yet - and you want delivery in time for the holidays (especially those ordering holiday cards!) please get those orders and payments into me as quickly as possible. Thanks!!

Saints vs. Patriots: My Dilemma

As most of my friends and long-time clients know, I'm originally a Boston girl. And that means a Patriots fan. I remember when the Patriots weren't so good. I remember when we all cheered "Squish the Fish!" (And they didn't.) So I've watched with pride and excitement as the Patriots have risen over the past several years and transformed into a powerhouse team. I've watched Tom Brady turn from a little-known back-up quarterback into one of the best quaterbacks in the NFL. (It doesn't hurt that he's drop-dead gorgeous either. ;) And I've rooted for them all along the way.

Then six years ago I moved to New Orleans. I adopted the city and its team, the Saints. Even though the Saints weren't very good back then. In fact we had season tickets when they weren't very good - go figure. (I wish we had them now!) But we still rooted for them. And in 2006, when we were all still feeling bruised and battered post-Katrina, all that love started to pay off. Our boys were playing like a whole new team. They had heart and drive and they gave us all something to root for. Something to be proud of. And we loved them all the more for it.

I've been lucky. For six years I've been able to root for both of my teams without conflict. After all, the Saints and the Pats are in different divisions and rarely play each other. But all of that changed this season. This season my husband and I immediately noted the big match-up on the schedule. This year I have to choose. And I've had the questions pouring in from friends and family both north and south.

Would I be rooting for my Patriots? The team that I have more than 30 years invested in. The team I grew up with. The team that still represtents my beloved hometown.

Or would I be rooting for my Saints? The team that I adopted. The team that I've rooted on to a 10-o record so far. The team that's done so much for the region that I've laid down roots in. Built a family in.

The answer is......

Sorry my northern loved ones... I promise I still love my Pats as much as ever and I'll be rooting for them in every other game they play this year. But the way I see it, the Patriots have kicked some serious butt these past several years. They've won championships and brought home rings. And I love them for it. I'm so glad they've succeeded. But now it's time for the Saints to have their share of the glory.

Yesterday morning I met up with funny little Marion and her parents who were in town for the holidays. I'm so glad that it worked out this year. They actually emailed me for a session this time last year, but I was out of town for the holidays.

Marion was a little lady on the go, full of mischief, a little mayhem and a mind of her own. And she was oh so beautiful. This first shot is one of my recent faves. I love the serious expression. I love the big brown eyes. I love those adorable pigtails. I just love it all.

One of the hardest things about being the photographer in the family is that you're never in any of the photos. I know that from first hand experience. So I could totally relate when a fellow photographer, the lovely and talented Jill Jones, contacted me for a holiday session for her family.

As moms our concern is documenting our children as they grow and hit various milestones. That's our gift to ourselves. To capture and preserve those moments so we have them to look back on when our children are grown. But the the photos we get in with our children... those are our gift to them. And while they may not appreciate them now, they'll treasure them down the road.

Over the past several years I've had the opportunity to watch the C family to rapidly expand from a family of three to a family of six. I have to hand it to L + G. I don't know how they do it, but they are raising four beautiful, sweet and spirited children - all age six and under! Considering my two run me ragged most days, I can only imagine the time effort and love they they put into their family. But the rewards are clear. Just look at this gorgeous family.

Sneak Peek: Maci's Mini [Bedico Baby Photographer]

Maci has certainly had plenty of time in front of the camera lately. We did her 6 month session in the Quarter and then followed up with a mini session in the park to capture some fun images of Maci in my tutus and in her Halloween costume. You can see an example of the cutest little duckling below. And now to round it out, here are a few of the tutu shots. Isn't she adorable? :)

The boys and I stopped by the park this morning to get a few quick pictures of them in their Halloween customes. Dylan is loving his knight costume - especially the sword! Logan was less sure of his lion costume, but I think he looks adorable. Not that I'm biased or anything. ;)

Lots of my baby planners are hitting the six month mark it seems! For Lucy's 6 month session we headed to the local "pumpkin patch" at St. Augustine's church and broke out the Halloween costume, lots of candy, the orange tutu and pumpkin hat and - of course - lots of real pumpkins!

This was my Logan last year at Halloween. I call it, "The pumpkin ate my baby!" Appropriate, don't you think? What a cute little chunker he was. It amazes me to look at this and then see how much bigger and older he is now, a year later. Walking. Talking (a little anyway). And into E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.

This photo reminds me of what a sweet, happy, easy-going baby he was. (After all, I did stick him almost naked in a giant, slimey pumpkin and he still smiled!) I just love it.

Sneak Peek: Emma... Take Two! [New Orleans Baby Photographer]

I met up with little miss Emma last weekend for a second shot at her one year session. What a difference a week and a half makes! Her first session was about 90 degrees and 90% humidity. ten days later and our reshoot was downright chilly! Luckily this session was uneventful and we got some great shots.

Look who's 6 months old already! Miss Maci was sitting up and ready for her close-up last weekend in the Quarter. She endured multiple outfit changes and cooler than expected temperatures with grace and charm, although the teething got the best of her a time or two. Apparently tulle is good for teething. Who knew? ;)

It seems like yesterday I was doing A + C's maternity session. And now look who's here! Sweet little Ava has arrived. And what a beautiful little girl she is with dark, curly hair and pudgy round cheeks. Little miss Ava was wide awake when I arrived (as you'll see below!) but patience and persistance paid off and we eventually got Ava into a nice deep sleep for the rest of her photo shoot.

Pumpkin Time

While Dylan was at Mothers Day Out this morning, Logan and I headed out for a little adventure of our own. We met up with some other moms and kids for a little get together at the local "pumpkin patch." I put that in quotes because, well, it's not really a pumpkin patch per se. More like a large collection of picked, stacked pumpkins. But it's cute and it's as close to a real pumpkin patch as we get this close to the city. :)

Not that it matters, because the kids certainly don't care. Logan had a great time exploring the pumpkins. And me... well I had forgotten how nice it is to get out of the house for something other than errands!

Have I mentioned this week how much I love newborn sessions? Oh yeah, I did. In Aiden's post. :) But never the less the truth stands. So needless to say, I was even more impressed that this sweetie traveled all the way from Gulfport, MS for his session. And I'm so glad he did. It took us a few minutes (okay, closer to 120 minutes) to get him to sleep. But once he conked out, he was the perfect little model.

Welcome to an extra-special, extra-big sneak peek here on the blog.

You see, my friends Corine + Beebe Tran, of the fabulous Studio Tran, were blessed last week with the birth of their second son, Aiden. And of course I jumped at the chance to do a newborn session with the little guy. What can I say? I just adore newborn sessions. Those squishy little faces, itty bitty hands and feet, and curly little bodies. With two little boys of my own I know how quickly that changes! Soon he'll be alert, then smiling, laughing, walking and running. But hopefully these images will help preserve those first weeks and everything that makes a newborn special.

This lovely family drove all the way in from Gulfport MS for our session with 2.5 year old Cooper. And what a cutie he was - beautiful blond hair and big brown eyes! And like most 2 year old boys, Cooper was a man on a mission. A mission to explore the park, climb every tree and cross every bridge. Luckily, I'm a woman with two little boys myself and I'm pretty used to grabbing shots on the go.

Have I ever mentioned how I love doing maternity sessions in the early evening? Just an hour or so before sunset is perfect. The is golden and so so beautiful. Now most of my littlest subjects aren't at their best that late in the day, but it's fantastic for session with adults or older children.

I met up with sweet Juliet Friday morning for a hot steamy session in the Quarter to commerate her one year year birthday. The good news is: Juliet was happy and far more cooperative than you could ever expect a one year old to be. The bad news: we almost beat the rain. Yep, ALMOST. Luckily we were almost done when it started to rain and we even finished up the session in the drizzle (until it started downpouring!).

Logan goes by a number of different names on any given day. Loganberry. Sweet Thing. Loganzilla. Destructo Boy. And lately Wild Thing. Or, if you're feeling formal, Mr. Wild Thing. He is all snips and snails and go, go, go. In other words, he's all boy. ;)

So I made a quick run to the park with him for some updated photos the other morning after I dropped Dylan off at Kid's Day Out. It was terrible timing. Logan was sleepy and cranky before we ever got there. And it was HOT. But I got in a few cute shots before he self-destructed on me.

I call this "blue steel," lol:

Sneak Peek: Aleicia + Chancellor [New Orleans Maternity Photographer]

The day of Aleicia and Chancellor's session, I was watching the weather carefully. We had planned an early evening session in the park, planning to take advantage of the beautiful golden light that appears just an hour or so before sunset.

Well, you know what they say about the best laid plans, right? Rain was predicted that day but as late afternoon arrived the sky was overcast (so much for my golden light) but the rain held off. We pushed our session a bit earlier to compensate for the dark sky. And then, just as I was walking out the door IT started. Big fat raindrops. I popped back inside to call Aleicia again. First we decided to postpone. Then we decided to go ahead and make the best of it with an indoor session.

But as I pulled up to Aleicia and Chancellor's house, the rain stopped. My golden light was still MIA, but I wasn't about to quibble with mother nature. We got a few quick shots inside and then headed outside. We decided against heading to our original location as time and daylight were growing short and instead opted to take advantage of their Uptown location. I think the results are well worth all the last-minute coordination.

A Note About Fall Sessions

As my long-time clients know, late September straight through the end of December are typically my busiest, craziest months all year. Everyone wants photographs for holiday cards and to give as gifts for family and friends. And who can blame them? :)

All this is to say, if you're interested in a Fall session, please book as soon as possible. October and November are already booking up fast. And this is especially important if you are looking for "milestone" portraits for your baby's first year. Booking early will ensure we can schedule your session in the right time frame.

And last but not least, keep your eyes on the blog for some upcoming announcements, including my annual "Christmas in October" holiday mini sessions and some sneak peeks of this year's holiday designs.

I'll be honest. This afternoon was pretty miserable. There I was, in the pouring rain, toting two cranky boys from the tile store to the post office to the bank. Fun times. In fact, most of the two-hour excursion was set to the whiney two-year-old tune of, "I wanna go home. I wanna go home. IWANNA GO HOME!"

Yup, fun times.

So as we pulled into the driveway (finally), I expected Dylan (of whiney two-year-old fame) to be ecstatic. I turned around to talk to him.

ME: Dylan where are we?

DYLAN: Mommy's house.

(Okay, not bad. I'll take it.)

ME: Is it Daddy's house too?

DYLAN: Uh-huh

(always the eloquent one, that boy)

ME: Is it Dylan's house too?

DYLAN: Uh-huh

(again, very verbose)

ME: Is it Logan's house too?

This time he stops to think. And says...

DYLAN: No. Baby lives there. (pointing to our neighbor's house)

Wishful thinking, my boy. Wishful thinking.

I can hardly believe this little guy is one already! It seems like just yesterday that he was this small. We went down to the Quarter for Zach's one year pictures and between his gorgeous blue eyes and red hair and the bright zaniness of the Quarter, the session was just a riot of color.

Please bear with me. After 10 days of being mostly out of pocket, I'm now back home. I have several orders waiting in my inbox, new inquiries, sneak peeks still to post and galleries to finish. I also have had some extenuating circumstances this week that are preventing me from working through everything as quickly as I would like. I promise I am working through it all as quickly as I can though. In the meantime, here are a few highlights from our trip:

1) After 10 days in the sun and despite copious amounts of SPF 50 sunblock, Dylan is TAN. Must be those dark-skinned French genes from Kevin.

2) After 10 days in the sun and copious amounts of SPF 50 sunblock, Logan is as pasty white as ever. ;) But he now has FRECKLES. That's my Irish genes.

3) The lost memory card from my previous post? FOUND! Yay!

4) The lost wedding ring? Still at the bottom of the bay. :(

5) Dylan has started calling me "mimi" less and less, and calling me "Mommy" more. I kinda miss "Mimi".

6) Operation potty training is well underway. Keep your fingers crossed for us. With any luck we'll soon only have one child in diapers!

lost but not found

We're now in the final hours of our summer vacation. My sister in law and her family headed out yesterday afternoon to start the long trek back to Houston (towing a boat no less.) Kevin headed back home last night so he be back at work this morning. Which means it's just me, the boys and my mother and father in law left at the "Alabama House." We took the boys down to the pool this morning for a couple dozen "last" slides down the waterslide. Now they're napping. Tonight we'll do one last trip to the beach for pictures and we'll pack up and head out in the morning.

Over the course of the trip we've acquired several things... a tan :), some much needed R+R, and probably a few pounds. But we lost a couple things as well. We noticed yesterday morning that Kevin's wedding band is missing. We believe he lost it waterskiing on Sunday. Which means it's most likely somewhere in the bay now, never to be seen again. And I lost one of my CF cards to my camera. I have tons of CF cards, so in and of itself, that's not a huge loss, but it did have several pictures I had taken of Logan playing with sea shells out on our balcony and it makes me sad to think I lost ANY photos of my kids, you know? But life goes on. I guess we'll be ring shopping again soon.

Well she posted a sneak peek on her blog (man, she's fast!) and I'm so excited I just have to share. Here we are! I love them. I mean seriously love them, love them, love them. :) Stephanie rocks. Last night I got to meet up with my friend and fellow photographer, Stephanie Fisher of Birmingham, AL. Not only was it great to catch up (the last time I saw her I was still pregnant with Logan!) and talk photo "stuff" with someone as ~~obsessed~~ passionate about photography as me, but we met up on the beach where Stephanie took some some photos of us. Yup, that's right. US. The whole family. That means I'm actually in some photos! Crazy, huh? The boys were about as cooperative as usual (read: not cooperative at ALL) but it was so much fun and I can't wait to see what Stephanie got!

Just a quick shot from here on the gulf coast of Alabama. We went out last night for a quick mini session with my boys and my two nieces. I used Logan for my test shots and I just loved this one of him. The little baby buddha belly hanging out the bottom of his shirt is just so HIM. My little beach bum. ;)

Every year we do a summer vacation with the whole family. Typically we go to Pensacola and the kids always call our rented condo "the florida house." This year we're in Orange Beach and the condo has been dubbed... what else?... the alabama house!
